This segment is approximately 9 miles long extending from Wax Lake Outlet to the Bridge across the Lower Atchafalaya River in Berwick. At present, US 90 is a 4 lane divided highway with no frontage roads. I-49 is planned to be aligned in the existing US 90 right-of-way wherever possible. Other alignments are under consideration between Red Cypress Road and Berwick.

This segment has been divided into three Subsegments designated Subsegments X, Y, and Z for the purposes of testing alternate alignments and interchange configurations within each. Drawings of these Subsegments were presented and discussed at the Second Public Meeting on February 19, 2001. The public can view them at the DOTD District 3 office in Lafayette, 428 Hugh Wallis Road and Patterson Civic Center, 116 Cotten Road. During the period between the Second and Third Public Meetings, comments are being received and the alternates are being refined.
